Lake Garda Flowers Damaged by Birds, Municipalities Investigate
Duck or flowers? More than a choice, it’s a “story” of a difficult coexistence. The news is light-hearted, the kind to make you smile or, if you prefer, to tell children. In reality, it is a real problem for the Municipal Administration which suddenly finds itself facing a not insignificant damage. At least, that’s what the words of the Public Works Councilor Aristide Avanzini suggest.
The flowerbeds and the damage to the violets
“A few days ago, the gardeners arranged violets in the flowerbeds along the Riva Mirabello lakeside to decorate the promenade that runs from the Lido of the same name up to the town center. Well, now only a few small plants remain of those violets. Almost all, especially in the area opposite the reed bed, have been damaged, pecked at, and perhaps already digested by the birds. All that remains is to gather the remains and consider alternative solutions,” reports the councilor over the phone.
The damages? “We have spent three million on flowers,” is the straightforward response. A figure that logically also includes the violets, currently unaffected, planted on the Riva Cornicello promenade. But beyond the numbers, the “disaster” is visible to all.
The birds and their role in the problem
Their, the aquatic birds that swarm Lake Garda, with territorial immunity, preferred not to make any statements: the advantages of “living” in a protected wildlife area.
