Lake Level Rise on November 7th: Wind, Storms, and Regulation Measures
In the magazine “La comunità del Garda”, issue 2/3, a recent article by Dr. Adalberto De Casto from the Commission for the Regulation of Lake Levels was published.
The November 7th Lake Level Rise
Particularly interesting is the section dedicated to the lake level rise on November 7th, which was also recorded in the Alto Carda.
“To suggest that this lake level rise… – writes De Casto – had caused damage due to the lake being at an excessively high level, is a theory refuted by the Operational Unit of Mantova, under the Water Magistrate.
It is solely the wind that causes storms and their effects, amplified or diminished depending on various factors (wave angle on the coastal structure, wind intensity and persistence, basin size, coastal morphology, etc.).
With wind speeds of 60 kilometers per hour, in basins of 20, 100, and 500 kilometers, waves of 2, 4, and 6 meters respectively can be produced.
The effects of the storm
The storm on November 7th also coincided with a lake level far above the “recommended” or “imposed” limits for the autumn period.
All these considerations led the Communities Assembly, in its latest session held in Sirmione, to decide on establishing a directorship for regulating the levels of the Carda.
The directorship will include representatives from the Community, the Mincio Consortium, and the Agency for Environmental Protection of Trento, which will assist the Water Magistrate of Venice, represented by the Operational Unit of Verona and Mantova.
