The Operational Lakes Unit of the Coast Guard was inaugurated in Milano, in the presence of the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, and the General Commander Nicola Carlone. This new facility, located in the building of the Interregional Public Works Authority, will be responsible for coordinating search and rescue operations, as well as ensuring navigation safety on Lakes Garda, Maggiore, and Como. With 100 military personnel deployed and a state-of-the-art operations room, the Unit aims to provide effective oversight for lake safety during the summer season.
In 2024, 144 rescue operations have already been coordinated on these lakes, assisting over 234 individuals and 88 watercraft. The establishment of this Operational Unit represents a significant advancement in safeguarding the safety of Italy’s inland waters, contributing significantly to the “Safe Lakes” initiative, which intensifies with the arrival of tourists. The creation of this command center underscores the Coast Guard’s commitment to monitoring and protecting nautical activities on Italy’s three major lakes.
