Lemon on Lake Garda launches baby bonus to encourage families
Limone sul Garda has recently introduced an innovative measure to tackle the demographic decline: a baby bonus that acts as a “thirteenth month” for newborns. With a population of just 1,075 residents, the municipality has decided to offer €750 for the first child and €1,500 for the second, along with an annual allowance of €1,500 starting from 2026 until the child’s sixth birthday. Mayor Franceschino Risatti highlighted that only five newborns were registered in 2025, emphasizing the importance of this initiative to encourage families to settle in the community. To further support families, Limone has invested €4.5 million in the construction of twelve new affordable housing units, aiming to counteract the youth exodus to Trentino, where incentives are more attractive. Those who relocate their residency can access various social supports, including services offered by the Sorriso nursing home with subsidized rates. Despite its popularity as a tourist destination — ranked first in Italy for tourist pressure in 2018 — the administration is seeking to balance the summer influx with effective strategies to promote childbirth and stabilize the resident population.
