Limone Landslide Sparks Calls for Reinforcement and Prevention Measures
“Given the bad luck we’ve been cursed with, maybe I should take a walk to the church.” Giambattista Martinelli, mayor of Limone, comments, half seriously and half jokingly, on the landslide that on Thursday night nearly hit the Hotel Panorama, burying about a dozen cars. This landslide represents the another blow in a very troubled tourist season for the center of the Brescian shoreline.
But Limone has not lost heart, and while a first damage assessment is being made, plans are already underway to implement solutions that can prevent similar situations from recurring.
Emergency interventions and prevention projects
“In the coming hours,” explains Martinelli, “technicians from the Genio Civile (Civil Engineering Department) and the Lombardy region will carry out site inspections. Our hope is that the regional administration will provide the necessary funding to complete the reinforcement works in the area.”
The barriers installed on 27 levels have, in fact, held up well, but it is necessary to finish their placement for them to be truly effective. This is demonstrated by what happened on the channel at the Hotel Capo Reamol, where the work has been completed: there were no problems.
So far, a total of two and a half billion euros have been spent on these works: another five hundred million and the project can be completed.
Water supply system situation
Meanwhile, some concern has been raised about the state of the water supply system. The mudflow uncovered a section of pipe that carries water from the water treatment plant to the distribution tanks, ripping out the computer cables.
Everything has been repaired, but the alert level remains high.
