Lombardy Achieves Over 74% Recycling Rate in 2024 Driven by Urban Waste Efficiency
Lombardy’s 2024 municipal waste recycling rate has reached a record 74.4%, up from 73.8% in 2023, according to ARPA Lombardia. The report highlights improvements in waste collection quality, with a recycling index now at 55.9%, surpassing the EU target of 55% set for 2025, and an 86.5% recovery rate of waste as material or energy.
The data also show a 3.8% increase in differentiated collection, totaling over 134,000 additional tons, with notable growth in plastic (+15.8%), textiles (+11%), and electronic waste (+7%). Over 900 municipalities exceed regional averages, and 597 surpass an 80% collection rate. Additionally, 98% of waste is managed internally within the territory, as noted by Environment Minister Giorgio Maione.
