The Lombardy region is set to transform the landscape of integrated public transport with the introduction of a new digital ticketing system, which will allow citizens to use a single platform for traveling on buses, trains, and ferries. The project was presented by the regional Transport Councillor, Franco Lucente, during the conference ‘The Digital Future of Mobility’ at Palazzo Lombardia. The trial phase is set to begin in the second half of 2026, with the aim of fully implementing the system by 2028, under the technical guidance of Aria S.p.A., the regional company.
The new system will enable users to board any public transport in Lombardy using a single app for validating and paying for their journeys, employing a ‘best fare’ logic to automatically calculate the most advantageous rates. During the testing phase in the Milan-Monza area, it will still be possible to use paper tickets, but by 2028 the entire system will be digitized. Ilario Cosma, project manager for Aria S.p.A., emphasized that this initiative represents a significant step towards smarter and more sustainable mobility in Lombardy.
