In Lonato del Garda, two significant urban redevelopment projects are underway, focusing on Piazza Corlo and Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII. These initiatives, which will result in temporary changes to traffic patterns, aim to enhance the functionality and safety of two strategic areas within the municipality, through public works targeted at renewing these spaces.

Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII: A New Space for the Community
The redevelopment work has commenced in Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII, located in the “Lonato 2” district. The project, whose executive plan was approved by the municipal council last October, involves a total investment of 200,000 euros. This amount is largely funded by municipal resources, supplemented by a portion from the regional “Commerce Districts 2022-2024” grant.
Mayor Roberto Tardani commented on the initiative: “This project aims to enhance a symbolic place in our municipality, transforming it into a modern, functional, and accessible space, ideal for hosting events and various activities, thereby making Lonato del Garda even more livable and dynamic. With the restoration of this area, we aim to provide citizens and visitors with an open space that promotes opportunities for gathering and celebration, as well as reflection and leisure.”
The area, approximately 4,300 square meters, which includes a lawn and a semicircular amphitheater, currently shows signs of degradation due to erosion, vegetation growth, and vandalism. The extraordinary maintenance work will include improving the paving, installing a new lighting system, and adding public benches. A key aspect of the intervention will be the removal of four pillars that currently block vehicle access, thereby facilitating future maintenance of the area. The completion of the works is expected by the beginning of the summer season.
Piazza Corlo: Redevelopment of the Northern Section Begins
The start of “Phase 1” of the redevelopment works in Piazza Corlo has been scheduled for Monday, August 18, 2025, focusing on the northern section (Brescia side) and expected to last about two months. The commencement of the construction was previously postponed to avoid overlap with other projects, such as the construction work on Via Gerardi, and to minimize disruption during events like the Regional Fair and the closure of the San Zeno tunnel.
The decision on the start date was also made to avoid interfering with summer events and to allow for the completion of preliminary work on the aqueduct on Via Accordini in July. “Phase 1” will involve paving approximately 648 square meters and replacing the existing roundabout with a new green area, where a tree will be planted at the center. The intervention is divided into two phases:
- Phase 1: Demolition and reconstruction of the asphalt pavement on the “Brescia side,” expected to take 40 days.
- Phase 2: Demolition and installation of new stone pavement on the “Verona side,” estimated to take 60-80 days. This second phase cannot begin before the August/September period to ensure the proper installation of the material.
Traffic Modifications for the Piazza Corlo Construction Site
To ensure safety during the works, significant changes to traffic will be implemented. The northern portion of the square will be completely closed to vehicular traffic, but pedestrian access will remain open. Access to the parking lot on Via dei Fanti from Piazza Corlo will be restricted; residents will be able to access it from Via Sant’Antonio. To facilitate traffic flow, a one-way alternate system regulated by traffic lights will be established on a temporarily gravelled road.
The connection between Via Regia Antica and Piazza Corlo, as well as Via Trento and Trieste, will be accessible in both directions only for residents. Parking spaces in front of the church and in the “fontanone” parking lot will have a time-limited parking allowance of 1 hour.
