Loppio-Busa Gallery Set to Open by End of 2027

A Tuesday inspection at the Loppio–Busa tunnel construction site took stock of progress and upcoming work phases, with Trento’s provincial president Maurizio Fugatti and mayors from the municipalities involved—Riva del Garda, Nago-Torbole, Drena, Tenno, Ledro and Dro—alongside Apt Garda Dolomiti chair Silvio Rigatti.

According to the latest figures, works worth over €78.6 million have been accounted for against an updated contract value of about €87.8 million. Inside the main tunnel, ventilation slab installation is underway, with 225 metres completed out of 2,780; 15 of 17 planned concrete pours for the bypass final lining are done, and the electrical cabin on the Maza side has been completed. In the service tunnel, 15 of 17 bypass connections have been finished, while outdoor sections continue as well, including completion of the artificial tunnel structure at San Giovanni and advanced retaining walls and road embankments. Works related to the temporary rerouting of state road 240 are also in progress, including excavation for the new junction serving the Mala industrial area and the anchored wall for a future roundabout.

The schedule calls for tenders for technological systems and road paving, with technology awards expected by the end of summer, followed by site handover and completion by end-2027; paving tenders will also be issued in the coming months, with completion expected by the end of next year. Separately, a €33 million project to build a new tunnel segment between the “curva dei rospi” and the Loppio lakeside—intended to bypass a protected natural area—moves forward with the deadline for design offers, and design award is planned by October 2026, executive design delivery by September 2027, construction tendering thereafter, with site opening in 2028 and completion estimated for 2030.
