Lugana DOC Consortium Prepares for Oversight Role as Law Enacts Control
Although newly appointed, the Technical Committee of the Lugana DOC Protection Consortium, chaired by Bruno Pasini and delegated by President Paolo Fabiani, is already working to fulfill the tasks assigned by the new internal regulation approved at the General Assembly last December and also provided for, as well as the Tasting Committee, by the new Statute that governs the life of the Consortium itself.
Also, the Protection, control, and oversight that Law 164 envisages can be assigned to the various Consortia that meet the necessary and essential requirements for such a role, may in the near future be assigned, with all the regulations and powers provided, to the Consortium which, in this case, will become the sole body responsible for territorial control and for the Lugana product within the territory.
This prerogative is one to which the Board of Directors is currently committing itself to meet the deadlines and requirements imposed by law. Currently, in the Brescia area, there is only one Consortium with oversight responsibilities; the Lugana Consortium would be the second to obtain such a mandate.
It is unlikely that other wine producers’ consortia will, within the existing terms, aspire to such roles. For them, and necessarily, there will remain the possibility of relying on other officially recognized consortia.
Role and importance of the oversight mandate
The significant role this mandate will play in the entire Lugana production sector is unquestionable. Indeed, it will be tasked with control and, above all, supervision to ensure compliance with the rules contained in the disciplinary that regulates the production of Lugana DOC wine.
This responsibility will not only concern members, but also all producers, winemakers, and bottlers of Lugana wine.
Non-members will also be required to contribute, without thereby acquiring the right to use the collective mark, to the fees necessary for the implementation and maintenance of this service, which aims to provide greater consumer confidence by guaranteeing that the product marketed complies with the typicity and genuineness, according to the characteristics outlined and unchangeable, in the disciplinary approved on October 3, 1998.
