Lugana DOC Joins Michelin Guide’s Top Italian Wines for 2023

With edition number 44, on sale for a few days now, of the legendary Guida Rossa Italia by Michelin, Lugana DOC is also included on the map of Italy’s most important wines.

This inclusion is no coincidence, as Lugana DOC has long been highly appreciated worldwide – for centuries even by popes and kings – illustrating the growing and steady professionalism of the producers of this marvelous nectar of Bacchus produced on the shores of Lake Garda.

Italian Regional Cuisine and Wine Pairings

It’s impossible to speak of a single Italian national cuisine, but, instead, a rich variety of regional cuisines. To assist your selection – as stated in the Michelin Guide introductions – in the map below, we have indicated next to each region the most renowned dishes, those easiest to find, and the most well-known wines; we leave the pleasure of describing their characteristics to the restaurateurs. Foods and wines from the same region often form a perfect pairing.

Among regional wines from Lombardy, Lugana is listed among the three recommended white wines, followed by three red wines and two sparkling wines. Overall, the Italian wines highlighted by the Michelin Red Guide across Italy number 114, including Lugana DOC for this edition.

The prestige of the Michelin Guide and its accolades

Talking about, and praising, this Guide, a pioneer among all sector-specific guides on hospitality and the best lodging, I believe is no longer necessary, given its wide recognition over the past forty years worldwide.

It is worth noting that the current edition features a total of 4,125 hotels and 3,365 restaurants, carefully selected with utmost seriousness and professionalism by industry experts, rather than just a formality.

In this edition, 598 establishments have been removed, while 516 new ones have been added. Regarding dining, only three establishments in Italy hold the coveted three Michelin stars; 16 are rated with two stars, and 206 with one star.

One of these one-star establishments (which in Guide terminology signifies excellent cuisine), accompanied by two forks (of good comfort), is shining in Lugana di Sirmione at Vecchia Lugana.

The three-star venues and typical dishes

It is worth remembering that among the three-star venues, Lugana DOC is certainly present at Dal Pescatore in Canneto sull’Oglio, which offers pairings with typical dishes such as steamed pike with parsley, anchovies, capers, and extra virgin olive oil or carpioneed tench and small fish flavored with orange.
