Migration of toads from Lake Loppio continues in S. Giovanni amid local concerns

If in Val di Ledro wild boars are causing problems with their destructive raids, in S. Giovanni the migration of the now famously known “toads” continues, as they move in large numbers from Lake Loppio towards the dense woods of Monte Baldo.

After nearly two weeks, the exodus has somewhat slowed down, aided by the high temperatures recorded in recent days, which effectively prevent the toads from moving.

However, the phenomenon has certainly not stopped; rather, everything suggests that at the first signs of rain, the tiny creatures will once again be on the move.

Expert comments and news on egg hatching

“Because,” explains Roberto Vivaldi, owner of the Passo S. Giovanni hotel, which has been overwhelmed by hordes of “Bufo bufo” — a scholar explained to me that it is not certain that all toad eggs in the Lake Loppio biotope have opened at the same time.

It depends on the humidity level of the place where they were laid. It is possible that some eggs in the lake remain untouched, ready to hatch in the coming weeks or months.

This would mean I will have to coexist with this phenomenon throughout the summer, and I am not thrilled about it. If I do not hear any news from the Province by tomorrow, I will go to speak with the assessor Berasi.

Field observations

Meanwhile, several skeletons of the poor creatures, crushed by cars, have been found even on the switchbacks leading to Val di Gresta.
