The new Operational Lakes Department of the Coast Guard has been inaugurated in Milano, in the presence of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini. The ceremony took place at the Interregional Office for Public Works located at Piazzale Morandi 1. This department will be responsible for coordinating search and rescue operations, ensuring nautical safety, and monitoring recreational boating on Lake Garda, Lake Maggiore, and Lake Como, with an active commitment of 100 personnel and a fleet of 16 operational vessels throughout the year.
The establishment of this department marks a significant advancement in managing safety on inland waters, especially with the summer season approaching, when tourist traffic increases. In 2024, the Coast Guard has already conducted 273 operations on the three major lakes. With the activation of this new command center, an improvement in operational efficiency is expected, thereby enhancing the safety measures for those navigating these waters.
