Montichiari Airport Development Plan Advances with Regional Approval

Recently, approval was granted by the Provincial Executive and now, perhaps as soon as Friday, the go-ahead by the Regional Executive.

This is the path that the Territorial Area Plan for Montichiari Airport is following, which in recent days has come under scrutiny from the center-left in Broletto.

The memorandum of understanding between the Province and Lombardy Region (Regione Lombardia) provides for the recognition of a delegated authority to the provincial administration to define the development planning of the area around Montichiari Airport, which currently involves the Municipalities of Montichiari, Castenedolo, and Ghedi, with the possibility of including others at a later stage.

Functions of the technical committee and strategic development

A dedicated technical committee will have two years to identify necessary interventions across various infrastructural sectors: from transportation and road management to environmental issues and industrial zones.

In essence, this instrument will serve as the Zoning Plan for the area surrounding the airport, responsible for regulating its development to prevent negative situations similar to those experienced at Malpensa.

Once drafted and approved by the Province, the Plan will be submitted to the Pirellone, which will ratify it definitively by establishing a specific regional law.

Funding opportunities and development goals

This recognition will then enable access to various funding, both national and European, for the implementation of related projects.

Why a Territorial Area Plan? It is widely acknowledged that Lombardy recognizes significant development potential for Montichiari, considering it the potential second hub after Malpensa.

However, to support the realization of this vision, several essential infrastructures need to be built, such as improved road connections to the A4 and A21 motorways.

Rail links and tourism development

There is a need on the agenda for a rail link: either from Brescia or even from Milan’s central station.

The increase in airport traffic will likely boost the tourist flow. Why not then consider establishing accommodation facilities?

Anticipating the needs of such developments is also a way to better plan land use.

Furthermore, the geographical location, free of urban congestion near the airport, enhances its suitability and potential for growth.
