Montichiari Celebrates Cattaneo Bicentennial with Conference and Cultural Events

Culture in the name of Carlo Cattaneo and the allegorical carts. This is what is in the works for the residents of Montichiari in February, before the municipal spring program begins with medieval games.

The Comune di Montichiari, in collaboration with the Centro Culturale Carlo Cattaneo of Castrezzato, is organizing a study conference on February 18th titled «Carlo Cattaneo: the path of democracy and progress passes through the door of Freedom».

Details of the conference

«The idea for this conference,» explains Elena Zanola, the Culture assessor, «was born to commemorate the bicentennial of Carlo Cattaneo‘s birth, an important figure for our Risorgimento.» The conference will begin at 9:45 a.m. with greetings from Mayor Rosa and the Culture assessor.

Following that, there will be an introduction by Carlo Agarotti, president of the Cultural Center, and a speech by Ettore Albertoni, regional councilor. At 11:30 a.m., a presentation by Carlo Moos, a history professor at the University of Zurich, is scheduled.

The journalist Sergio Salvi will also speak, preceded by a screening of Romano Bracalini’s film «The places and ideas of Carlo Cattaneo federalist». After lunch, featuring typical nineteenth-century dishes at the Faro restaurant, at 3:30 p.m., there will be a round table on «Regions and Reasons of Europe», chaired by Carlo Lottieri (Professor of Philosophy of Law at the University of Siena) with the participation of Alessandro Vitale (an expert in International Relations and faculty at the Statale University of Milan), Aldo Moltifiori (former mayor of Monza), Sergio Salvi, and Romano Bracalini.

Upcoming events and activities

The Pro Loco di Montichiari will revive the carnival tradition on the following Sunday, February 25th; allegorical carts will converge on the square.

«We won’t be able to use the park at Castello Bonoris yet,» explains Mariangela Medeghini, president of Pro Loco, «because electrical system work is ongoing, but we will make up for it before summer».

It is expected that the Castle, with its large green park, will be available again to the public in conjunction with the Maggio Monteclarense, especially on Saturday, May 12th, when the city will celebrate its patron San Pancrazio.

Medieval Games with typical Brescia gastronomic markets are also still planned. The Castello Bonoris will come alive with historical costumed figures and theatrical performances.
