Navigarda Ready to Maintain Lake Garda Connectivity Amid Infrastructure Delays

“We are ready. If the intention of the provincial authorities in Trento is not to reopen the Gardesana Occidentale until the proposed tunnel to Limone is completed, Navigarda is fully prepared to take on the task of ensuring the connection, by lake, between Riva and the Brescia shore.”

Navigarda’s Commitment

Word of the captain, Francesco Bacchin, one of the “historic” commanders of the Navigarda fleet on Lake Garda. His intervention is aimed at defending the company where he has been employed for about twenty years and which he knows perfectly well.

To such an extent that he can provide a reliable judgment on the current situation regarding Navigarda and, consequently, in a future projection. “We have the men and the means to face this particular situation”, recounts the captain, “and our fleet is growing”.

In addition to those already in service, we are purchasing more ships that will soon sail the waters of Garda. However, it doesn’t depend solely on us. Everyone needs to do their part, otherwise, it happened two years ago during the emergency caused by that tragic landslide, which had isolated Limone from Trentino, with ferries and boats being made available that were regularly running empty.

And this was because the buses made the loop from Tremosine. Greater seriousness is required from those governing and managing. For example, you can’t wait for the landslide to fall or, worse, for someone to get hurt before taking action.

Following the emotional response to the tragic February ’99 incident, a safety intervention for the road to Limone was considered, and at that time, Navigarda was placed on alert.

But nothing was done, and now we are back to square one. In Francesco Bacchin’s statements, there is also room for a touch of nostalgic pride: “Riva has completely forgotten its origins, which are lake-based, not mountain-based, as some administrators think.”

Today, it even feels ashamed of having a port, camouflaging it with washing machines, railway shelters, and flower boxes that block passage. And to think it was once one of the first and most renowned naval schools in Northern Italy.
