Nine Swans Die in Peschiera Amid Bacterial Pollution Concerns
Nine swans dead in fifteen days. All in Peschiera, mostly in the Bergamini area. The animals, as far as is known, exhibited a strange disease that would cause high fever and respiratory difficulties. The alarm was raised by the Verona section of the Lipu (Italian League for Bird Protection) after one of its members made every effort to save two swans showing the symptoms.
However, for one of the birds, there was nothing to do, while the other managed to survive thanks to care provided by Giulio Russo, a veterinarian of Lipu, who promptly intervened with antibiotics and cortisone. It is he, after conducting some tests on the two birds, who managed to identify the cause of death: it is believed to be a septicemia of the blood caused by severe bacterial pollution.
Investigations into the cause
“But where does this bacteria come from?” asks Francesco Di Grazia, the provincial head of the Lipu guards, who immediately points the finger at the frequent issues with the Garda collector. “I don’t understand why,” Di Grazia says immediately, “it is being denied that there are problems with the collector; it seems like a ‘conspiracy of silence’.”
And if it doesn’t come from there, where else could this bacteria come from if no illegal discharges have been found in the “affected” zone?”
