Orchis 2000: International Orchid Conference in San Zeno di Montagna
After the photographic exhibition created in collaboration with the Museo civico di storia naturale di Verona and with the sponsorship of the Verona Culture Department, the Verona branch of the Giros, namely the Gruppo italiano ricerche orchidee spontanee, now has its main event of the season ready, indeed, of the new millennium.
We are talking about “Orchis 2000”, the first international conference whose purpose is to explore this topic in depth. The organizers will achieve this not only through presentations by many of the most renowned European experts in the field but also by integrating the scientific program with various educational and promotional activities.
Location and organization of the conference
The designated venue to host this important event is San Zeno di Montagna, one of the main tourist centers of the Monte Baldo range, which is also considered by botanists worldwide as one of the most extraordinary sites for observation and research, today as in centuries past.
The international conference on Europe’s wild orchids, in addition to the Giros, has been organized by the Comune di San Zeno di Montagna, the Montane Community of Baldo, and the Garda Community.
“Thanks also to this extensive collaboration among different administrative and cultural entities operating in the area,” explain local organizers Michele dal Gin, Galeazze Sciarretta, Ennio Agrezzi, and Sergio Bonafini (all from the Verona section of Giros), “it has been possible to prepare a rich calendar of activities, both before and parallel to the conference itself, which will include, beyond the photographic exhibition already held at the Natural Sciences Museum of Verona, guided excursions of both cultural and naturalistic nature, poster displays, cultural city tours for international guests and others, as well as various social activities, including even a small boat cruise on Lake Garda.”
Goals and duration of the event
In short, from this Sunday until Friday, May 19, there will be something for everyone, as the organizers rightly emphasized at the end of the symposium’s presentation brochure: “Orchis 2000 is not only a scientific conference but also and above all an opportunity for cultural growth and promoting the image of our province.”
