ParkinsOnLake: Sailing as a Path to Balance, Independence, and Community
The first edition of “ParkinsOnLake,” a pilot project that took people living with Parkinson’s disease sailing on Lake Garda, has concluded. The initiative, developed in collaboration between ASST Garda and HYAK APS, ran until July 31, 2026, and was presented at a final press conference as a way to combine movement, safety, social connection and overall physical and psychological wellbeing.
The project was designed as a complementary activity alongside care, with sailing intended to continuously stimulate balance, coordination and muscle tone while allowing participants to test their abilities within their own limits. ASST Garda neurologist Massimo Biacca said the activity can act as a field-based complementary therapy and may support neuroplasticity, while Roberta Chiesa, ASST Garda’s general director, highlighted that the initiative focuses on quality of life and everyday assistance—not just treating the condition.
Participants reported improved self-confidence and stronger group dynamics. They described the boat as a welcoming and safe environment, with water movement helping balance and instructors guiding activities with competence and patience, while also stressing the importance of mutual trust and shared experience. The organisers said they are looking to build on the results and expand the programme to reach more people in the future, positioning ParkinsOnLake as an example of how movement, relationships and autonomy can support pharmacological therapies for those living with Parkinson’s.
