Protection of the Lazise wreck: the remediation project has been launched

Lazise initiates the rescue of the galley that sank in 1509, an important operation for the preservation of this historical wreck. The project, which takes place approximately 450 meters off the new harbor, began with the removal of alien bivalve mollusks that have colonized the remains of the self-sunken ship, scuttled by the Venetians during the war against the League of Cambrai. The activities are led by professional divers and underwater archaeologists and are funded by the Ministry of Culture through the Superintendency of Verona, Rovigo, and Vicenza. The first phase of the intervention was completed in the first half of September and included the collection of wood samples to analyze the degradation of the timber. Alessandro Asta, the underwater archaeologist in charge of the project, emphasized the importance of these operations to ensure effective long-term protection of the galley’s remains. The activities will continue with additional phases that are already funded, and it is expected that the operations will be completed by next year. Italian Version
