Repopulation of the coregone: a new era for sustainable fishing at Lake Garda
The coregone, a fish emblematic of the lake, will be allowed to be repopulated after five years of a fishing ban. Alessandro Beduschi, the Regional Councillor for Agriculture in Lombardy, has announced that the Simplification Law 182 of December 2, 2025, permits the suspension of the ban on introducing non-native species until May 31, 2026. This regulatory change represents a significant opportunity for the restoration of a species that has historically inhabited the waters and for supporting sustainable fishing and the local economy. With the commencement of the operational phase, professional fishermen are preparing to seek the breeders necessary to ensure approximately 40 million eggs to be released into the lake by February 2026. This step is considered historic and essential for enhancing traditional activities linked to the lake. Beduschi emphasizes that the return of the coregone is not only symbolic but also strategic for the future of fishing in Lake Garda, reaffirming the Region’s commitment to supporting a sector that has always represented identity and quality in the area.
