Repopulation of the Coregone: New Life for Fishing at Lake Garda
The coregone, an emblematic fish of Lake Garda, will once again populate the waters of the lake after a five-year hiatus in restocking efforts. The announcement was made by Alessandro Beduschi, the Agriculture Councillor of the Lombardy Region, following the approval of Simplification Law 182 on December 2, 2025, which has suspended the ban on introducing non-native species until May 31, 2026. This ban, in effect since 2020, had prevented the restocking of coregone, leading to severe consequences for professional fishing and local traditions. The operational phase for restocking will begin in the coming days with professional fishermen seeking out breeders, which are necessary to ensure approximately 40 million eggs for the fish hatchery in Desenzano. If all goes according to plan, young coregoni could be introduced into the lake as early as February. Beduschi emphasized the importance of this intervention for enhancing traditional fishing activities and highlighted how this decision represents a significant step towards the future of fishing in the Garda area.
