Recently, Salò has experienced a significant increase in Arab tourism, presenting a valuable opportunity for local commerce. Andrea Maggioni, president of the Salò Promotion merchants’ association, emphasized that visitors from Gulf countries not only compensate for a decline in the average spending of Europeans but also bring a high purchasing power. These tourists, known for their attention to style and elegance, primarily engage in luxury shopping, significantly contributing to sales in the town’s boutiques and high-end shops.
Maggioni highlighted that data on tax-free shopping shows that Arab tourists are among the most generous in terms of spending, with average amounts surpassing those of visitors from other countries. However, cultural and religious differences can complicate the culinary experience offered by the region. Despite this, many restaurateurs are adapting their offerings to meet the specific needs of this international clientele, showcasing traditional dishes and non-alcoholic alternatives. With these strategies, Salò is positioning itself to solidify its status as a small “pear of Lake Garda” in the global tourism landscape.
