Salò Hosts Conference on Polemos and Warfare in Ancient Literature

On Thursday, the Salò Library hosted a discussion on Giuseppe Zanetto’s book “Polemos” as part of the “Storia e Storie” series. Zanetto, a professor of Ancient Greek Theatre Literature at the University of Milan, explored themes of war, myth, and conflict, highlighting contradictions and values in ancient representations of warfare.

The event referenced classical texts such as Homer’s “Iliad,” Euripides’ “The Trojan Women,” and works by Simone Weil, examining pacifism and patriotism in ancient Greece and their relevance today. Discussions included mythological episodes like Priam’s encounter with Helen and the reburial of fallen soldiers, illustrating how ancient literature depicted war.
