Salò honors Greta and Umberto with the dedication of two weeping willows. On Thursday, June 19, at 6:30 PM, a commemorative ceremony will take place in the garden of Palazzo Morgante, along the lakeside, to honor the memory of the two young victims of the nautical tragedy that occurred in 2021. Greta Nedrotti, 24, and Umberto Garzarella, 36, were struck by a speedboat in an incident that profoundly affected the local community. During the event, organized by the Amici del Golfo association and supported by the Municipality of Salò, the two willows will be planted alongside a commemorative plaque that will highlight the serious violations of navigation laws related to their deaths.
The tragedy has spurred a social mobilization that culminated in the approval of Law 138/2023 on nautical homicide, which introduces the crime of nautical homicide into the penal code and imposes harsher penalties for those causing fatal accidents or injuries while operating vessels. This legislative change has been strongly advocated by the victims’ families, including Enzo Garzarella, Umberto’s father, who expressed the desire for such tragedies not to occur again. The ceremony represents not only a moment of reflection but also a step towards greater safety in Italian waters.
