Short-term rentals and the right to housing: petition for Lake Garda

In recent days, a public petition has been launched to counter the growing prevalence of short-term rentals, promoted by the Autonomous Garda Collective and the Garda Environment Table. The proposal, titled “Against Touristification and for the Right to Housing,” arises in response to the increasingly evident difficulties that local residents face in finding available properties due to the expansion of the tourist rental market. According to the promoters, this situation is exacerbated by job insecurity and insufficient wages, making it challenging for many to find a place to live.

The petition calls for effective political intervention and includes specific proposals such as establishing a requirement to change the use of non-hotel tourist facilities and a moratorium on new openings in areas with a high concentration of short-term rentals. Additional suggested measures include a census of municipal properties available for residential purposes and tax incentives to promote long-term rentals. These initiatives aim to protect the right to housing and mitigate the impact of touristification on local communities.
