Sirmione and Pollution: the Garda Ecosystem in Crisis

Recent statements from the WWF highlight a concerning situation of pollution in the lake, emphasizing that the ecosystem is in crisis and cannot be regarded as a mere swimming pool. Paolo Zanollo, a representative of WWF Bergamo Brescia, has raised alarms about the health of the lake, asserting that despite claims of “excellent waters,” Lake Garda is ecologically compromised and has been neglected for years. The lack of an adequate sewage system continues to pose a significant threat: many municipalities have yet to separate wastewater from stormwater, resulting in a constant influx of toxic substances into the lake. Moreover, the presence of persistent pollutants such as PCBs and dioxins, along with the increase of microplastics, is exacerbating the situation. The WWF also denounces the introduction of invasive alien species that disrupt the ecological balance of the lake. According to Zanollo, it is crucial for institutions to recognize the seriousness of the situation and act responsibly to protect the local ecosystem. Ignoring these issues will only further compromise the health of Lake Garda and its future. Italian Version
