Sirmione Declares Citywide Mourning for Alexandru Sorin Ploiasu

Sirmione has declared citywide mourning for the morning of Tuesday, July 28, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., for the funeral of local resident Alexandru Sorin Ploiasu. The decision was issued by Mayor Luisa Lavelli following Alexandru’s death on July 18, 2026, during an attempted rescue of a child in the waters of Lake Garda. Alexandru, who had lived in Sirmione for years, worked for a navigation company operating on the lake.

According to Ordinance No. 98 of July 27, the community expressed condolences for the courage he showed during the emergency, when he intervened to help a child in difficulty. Despite search and rescue operations, the incident ended tragically with Alexandru being lost in the lake. The funeral will take place at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of San Francesco in Colombare, with an Orthodox rite.

Before the service, the casket will depart at 9:30 a.m. from Brighenti Funeral Home toward Piazzale Porto, where Sirmione’s motorboats will gather for a final farewell. After the religious ceremony, the procession will continue on foot to the Colombare cemetery. From 10:00 a.m., a minute of silence will be observed at municipal offices and, where possible, at workplaces and local activities; the ordinance also orders flags to be flown at half-mast on municipal buildings and invites businesses, associations, and citizens to join in respectful expressions of mourning.
