Sirmione Environmental Center Boosts Weather Monitoring and Conservation Efforts

Over one hundred bulletins distributed and circulated in 7,800 copies to about thirty entities and tourist agencies. The Centro di rilevamento ambientale di Sirmione reports a balanced budget, making it a “jewel” of weather forecasting and environmental monitoring, but also a driver of environmental conservation initiatives. An agile and effective organization that is about to be imitated by other locations.

Distribution and collaboration of the center

The bulletins are distributed via a pre-printed color typographic form at the counters of the Apt, hotels, motorboat consortiums, and posted at the entrance of all beaches within the municipal territory. The fax service then reaches around thirty users: Municipalities, law enforcement agencies, Fire Brigades, sailing clubs, and local television stations.

An interesting collaboration also involves the Osservatorio Bianchi, also of Sirmione, conducted with great passion by Diego Bianchi, a sailing expert (his website: www.meteosirmione.it), located in the historic center. It provides weather condition updates on the lake.

Weather services and activities of the center

The Bianchi Center is equipped with two meteorological stations (Sirmione and Desenzano) that automatically and in real-time provide weather data, with special emphasis on wind conditions. With these two daily bulletins, constantly updated, the Inter-municipal Protection Service, based still in Sirmione, is able to offer highly efficient emergency response services.

In addition to the website (www.comune.sirmione.bs.it/meteo), which averages around 400 visits per day, a folder was also created on the Desenzano civic network, which recorded 1,500 visitors from April to December 2000.

Furthermore, bulletins are posted at six beaches in Sirmione to inform bathers about weather forecasts, water quality, humidity, and preventive measures to avoid contact dermatitis caused by water contact.

Promotion and environmental activities

But, as mentioned, the Cra‘s activities are not limited to this. Noteworthy is the promotion and dissemination of initiatives and data of environmental, meteorological, and territorial interest.

The Environmental Center, which has its headquarters at Punta Staffalo, is becoming a testing ground for experimental demonstrations in hydrobiology and limnology for local schoolchildren. It also continues its fruitful collaboration with the Cnr of Milan and Venice.

Sirmione has already begun to benefit from this environmental institution. Last year, it was awarded the European Blue Flag, a recognition of high prestige, although it has not been renewed for the current season.

Environmental education and land protection

However, if the goal is to preserve nature, the environment, and landscape — as Eugenio Zilioli, head of Cra, asserts — it is essential to educate young people. Therefore, courses and guided visits in collaboration with schools must be organized.

A pathway that includes both visits to the territory and its distinctive features, as well as access to documentation and audiovisual materials.

“Sirmione — Zilioli notes — is a city of water, with its historic center built on an island, making it a particularly fragile environment. Its territory and landscape are a truly unique resource, where even a small disturbance can ruin a delicate balance.”
