July 14, 1958 marks an important date for transportation on Lake Garda, with the debut of the Freccia del Garda hydrofoil, built by the Rodriguez Shipyards in Messina. This vessel, capable of carrying up to 80 passengers, stands out for its innovative hydrofoil technology, which allows the hull to lift above the water’s surface, symbolizing modernity and progress for its time. The Garda Community, established in 1955, played a key role in the introduction of this revolutionary watercraft, thereby contributing to the region’s tourism growth.
The Freccia del Garda not only captivated adults but also became a coveted object for children, thanks to the toy models created during that period. An original model was recently donated to the Garda Community by collector Umberto Sbaraini, a former commander of the Carabinieri Station in Gardone Riviera. This gesture underscores the historical significance of the hydrofoil and its lasting impact on local culture and the collective imagination of the Garda community.
