The Green Witch: Echinacea

The warm July sun brings us into the height of summer, where the sweet and frantic song of the cicadas accompanies our days in nature. Given the high temperatures, I chose to talk about a very rustic plant for this month. It tolerates heat and drought very well, yet it can also survive down to -10°C by entering vegetative rest, returning more lush than ever in spring: I am talking about ECHINACEA.

Originally from North America, it is known for its daisy-like flowers and its medicinal properties, particularly for supporting the immune system. It is used in herbal remedies for colds and flu, but also in cosmetics for its healing and anti-inflammatory properties. It loves full sun but requires well-drained soil and water only when the soil is dry.

Prune its withered flowers to stimulate new blooms. The most common species have colors ranging from white to pink, red, yellow, and even orange. I am also happy to share that it is highly appreciated by our small pollinating friends and is pet-friendly. Have fun using this plant to color your balconies and gardens. I am sure daisy lovers will appreciate it very much.

Green Advice

During your walks in nature, I invite you to carry a field guide to wild herbs, so you can give a name to every plant you meet on your way. I want to invite you to look at a meadow with different eyes… with greater sensitivity. I wish you a wonderful summer. A warm embrace from your green witch.
