A tragedy in Gargnano has struck the local community and tourists alike, following the death of Mateusz Chwastyniak, a 43-year-old Polish cyclist. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon when the man fell into the lake from a cliff over 90 meters high while hiking with friends. The victim, originally from Leszno, was staying at a hotel in Riva del Garda and had chosen to explore the southern part of the lake. His parents and wife arrived yesterday for the identification of the body, which was subsequently repatriated to Poland.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are tragically complex: after a stop between the Eutenia tunnel and Ciclopi, Chwastyniak briefly stepped away for personal reasons and was later found lifeless in the lake below. Despite immediate assistance being summoned by his friends, there was nothing that could be done. The body was recovered by the Coast Guard shortly after the incident. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances that led to this tragic fatality.
