Tremosine Library Launches Updated Guide and New Natural History Volume

With the nearly simultaneous publication of two volumes, the library of Tremosine – presided over by Marcello Cobelli – launches the high summer season of cultural activities in the Alto Garda region. The first book (“Tremosine – brief guide“) is a reissue of a text written by don Gabriele Scalmana about a dozen years ago. A book, supported by the Library and the Municipal Administration, that Cobelli considers fortunate, stating, “it quickly became official and authoritative, born from the experience and study of a true enthusiast of his land. We couldn’t exclude the publication of this second edition, updated with new texts and images.”

Diego Ardigò, the mayor: “Multiple times in recent years, in different settings, there has been an emphasis on the need for a concise yet well-documented publication, capable of effectively synthesizing the historical, cultural, and socio-economic context.” The book by Scalmana aims, therefore, to “enhance the identity of the local community and facilitate the information of visitors,” including sections previously absent, such as local cuisine and Tremosine dialect. Additionally, new images have been added to complement the volume. Three thousand copies have been printed, featuring color photos and, in 2002, there were plans for a German edition to follow.”

The second volume and technical content

The other volume, freshly printed, is the result of the work by Eugenio Montagnoli, cousin of the late publisher Roberto Montagnoli (Grafo) and author of a study on the life of Arturo Cozzaglio. Montagnoli lives in Verona but visits Tremosine whenever he can. He personally handled the graphic illustrations after being assisted in compiling the book by Marcello Cobelli, the President of the Library. The title is “The Garda Region, Features of Natural History,” and the book considers Garda geology, dedicating its effort to his brother, Franco, a former mayor of Tremosine.

As the pages unfold, the reader moves from the description of the Alpine orogeny (Alps, Pre-Alps, thrust sheets), to the Giudicarie system (Giudicarie and Ballino lines, overthrusting of the northern Garda Bresciana, Garda depression in the central-northern area, Monte Baldo), up to the hydrographic variations north and south of the lake: Chiese, Adige, Lagarina Valley, Sarca, and, naturally, Lake Garda. The volume also includes notes on watercourses: Ledro Valley, Ponale, Brasa, San Michele, Toscolano, Barbarano, and so on. The author explains that “the book is aimed at natural sciences enthusiasts, particularly those interested in the planet’s geological history, with a focus on the Garda area.”

The book, financially supported by Wind and Bcc del Garda, has the patronage of the Regione, the Provinces of Brescia and Verona, the Mountain Community, the Garda Community, and the Civil Library.
