Trentino Pharmaceutical Spending and Innovation Trends Set for 2024
Trentino’s 2024 pharmaceutical report shows the provincial health service reimbursed approximately 1,430 daily doses per 1,000 residents, with no patient ticket required for medications. The region maintains a low contribution rate of 8.9% for branded drugs versus generics, thanks to high use of equivalent medicines, and has kept overall pharmaceutical spending below national averages.
Per capita expenditure on reimbursed drugs was €145, about 12% below the national average, while direct purchases cost €225 per capita, 18.5% less than Italy. The most common prescriptions include cardiovascular medications and vitamin D, with a 30% higher consumption compared to national levels. Antibiotic prescriptions increased slightly by 2.6%, and psychotropic use among children aged 0-17 grew by 55% post-pandemic. In nursing homes, average daily drug administration was 7.4 doses per resident, and spending on innovative drugs totaled €5.9 million, a million less than 2023, funded provincially due to the absence of national funds.
