Verona Flights Moved to Montichiari Airport Amid Bomb Disarmament
A bomb… It brings the Montichiari airport back to the hectic pace of the early months: tomorrow, from 9:45 AM to 5:45 PM, all departing and arriving flights from Verona Villafranca will be moved to the D’Annunzio runway, allowing sappers to disarm an explosive device found on the outskirts of the city of Verona.
Flights arriving from Naples at 10:30, Catania at 11:20, Frankfurt at 11:40, Munich at noon, Barcelona and Paris at 12:40, Rome at 15:35, Munich at 16:10, and Frankfurt at 16:20 will therefore land at Montichiari. Passengers will be transferred by bus to Villafranca.
Passengers departing for Frankfurt (12:15 PM), Paris (12:35), Munich (12:40), Cologne and Olbia (13:40), Rome (16:25), Frankfurt (16:40), Munich (17:00), and Catania (17:40) must arrive at the Montichiari airport instead of Verona, with the usual advance notice before the flight’s scheduled departure.
Security interventions and reason for disarmament
The D’Annunzio airport thus surpasses all fire watch and flight control requirements for such events, fully meeting the standards required of an airport handling jet flights. The disarmament concerns a large explosive device (estimated at 250 kilograms) found in the Santa Lucia neighborhood on the outskirts of Verona during excavations for a condominium construction.
Security reasons lead to the closure not only of the railway station but also of the airport, despite it being located not very close to the discovery site, due to air traffic routing issues.
