Vittorio Arrigoni and Gaza: a forgotten humanitarian activist
A significant meeting took place at the Fermi High School in Salò, where Egidia Beretta shared the poignant story of her son, Vittorio Arrigoni, a humanitarian activist who was killed in Gaza in 2011. During the event, Egidia illustrated how Vittorio, a member of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), dedicated his life to defending the rights of Palestinians, serving as a “human shield” to protect those risking their lives in their daily activities. Through touching anecdotes and videos, the significance of his work within the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the courage with which he faced threats emerged. Egidia’s narrative highlighted not only the hardships faced by Palestinians but also Vittorio’s determination to bring the truth about the situation in the region to light. Despite warnings and persecution from Israeli authorities, he continued to return to Palestine to fight for justice and equality. The meeting concluded with a letter written by a young girl at Vittorio’s grave, expressing gratitude for the ideals he represented and for the courage he inspired in those who strive for a better future.
