Vittorio Messori Supports Lonato Green Spaces Defense Against Development

Also Vittorio Messori is stepping into the defense of the greenery of Maguzzano and Barcuzzi in Lonato. A committee is being formed with the aim of protecting – from the onslaught of concrete – the areas surrounding the historic Abbey of Maguzzano in Lonato.

The writer – who lives in Desenzano, but has recently been working on a small study within the Abbey itself – has also joined. A petition has been organized, signed by over seventy people, which has been addressed, among others, to the mayor of Lonato, Morando Perini.

Objectives and Mobilization

Mantra: let’s save the green spaces in this area. “This is an initiative that should unite, not divide,” emphasizes Messori. “It’s about defending a territory that is a patrimony not only environmental but also cultural. It is a committee bringing together people of different opinions, but who agree on the need to protect this zone, which is an integral part of the Maguzzano Abbey and its thousand years of history.”

Vittorio Messori is not the only “VIP” to support the environment of Lonato. “Our initiative,” explains Costanza Lunardi from Barcuzzi, a journalist with Gardenia magazine and one of the promoters, “has also been joined by Roberto Vecchioni,” among others.

Criticisms and Requests

The coordination for the defense of Maguzzano and Barcuzzi uses quite stern language: “The landscape, agricultural, and natural characteristics of this specific part of Lonato’s territory evoke images of the Tuscan landscape. The band of morainic hills has been brutally attacked with excavations and violent land developments.”

We ask the Lonato municipal administration to pay attention and show respect for the naturalistic, agricultural, and scenic areas of its territory.” The current Lonato Administration – it has been reported – inherited a situation in this zone prior to the issuance of building permits. Therefore, new construction sites are likely to soon open.”

“We will keep watch,” emphasized Vittorio Messori, “with great attention to what happens in the coming period. Ready to continually draw attention to this extraordinary heritage that must be preserved.”
