West Nile Virus in Medole: serious neuroinvasive infection affects entrepreneur
Infected by the West Nile virus, Mantuan entrepreneur hospitalized in serious condition. A 75-year-old entrepreneur residing in Medole has developed a neuroinvasive infection from the West Nile virus, following a sudden deterioration in his already fragile health. Currently, the man is in intensive care at the Neurological Intensive Care Unit of the Spedali Civili in Brescia, where doctors have been administering antiviral treatment and continuous monitoring for the past ten days, following initial symptoms such as weakness and confusion.
This marks the third reported case this year in the province of Mantova, but the first with such a high level of clinical severity. According to information provided by the hospital, the entrepreneur has not traveled or stayed elsewhere recently, suggesting that the infection may have occurred locally through Culex mosquitoes. Although the disease often presents asymptomatically or with mild symptoms such as fever and muscle aches, it can lead to severe complications in elderly or immunocompromised individuals.
