Wind Forecasts in Upper Garda: ICON Replaces COSMO LAMI for Technical Monitoring

Wind forecasts for Alto Garda have been updated by Meteotrentino, now utilizing the ICON model following the discontinuation of COSMO LAMI in October 2025 due to the merger of the COSMO consortium with the ICON development group. The service, updated twice daily and available on the organization’s website, provides precise wind predictions for sailors, surfers, instructors, race officials, and local maritime operators.

The ICON model, developed through international collaboration among meteorological centers and research institutes, complements the WRF model from the University of Trento. Wind monitoring graphics for Riva del Garda and Medio Garda display real-time data on local winds such as Òra, Vinessa, Vent, and Pelér, with resolutions of approximately 2 km (ICON) and 1 km (WRF). Initial performance assessments are positive, though minor variations from previous forecasts may occur, with the service continuously updated.
