World Lakes Day: Bardolino Revives Bid for Lake Garda as 2029 European Capital of Culture

On the occasion of World Lakes Day, Bardolino highlighted Lake Garda as a shared environmental, social and cultural asset for the communities along its shores, calling for renewed attention to ecosystem protection and the lake’s role in local development.

The initiative frames the lake as a “common good” that requires ongoing care, protection and promotion, stressing that its identity—shaped by landscapes, history and traditions—goes beyond municipal borders and depends on stable cooperation among the area’s towns. Bardolino also linked the message to its push to have Lake Garda named Italian Capital of Culture 2029, aiming to present the lake as a single community built on a shared history and cultural heritage.
