WWF Warns of Rapid Decline in Cannes Ecosystem Near Lake Iseo

Lakeside reed beds are rapidly declining, with a 34.84% reduction—over 66,000 square meters—recorded between 2009 and 2018 in the lower Brescia area, according to WWF Bergamo Brescia. If current trends persist without intervention, these reed beds could disappear entirely within approximately 20 years.

Multiple factors contribute to this decline, including pollution from sewage and chemicals, water level fluctuations, wave action from boats, mechanical removal, shoreline infrastructure, and invasive species. Current restoration efforts have shown limited success, and maintenance relies mainly on volunteers. Experts call for comprehensive research, regular monitoring, institutional maintenance, and restrictions on new shoreline developments to address pollution and water level issues.
