Valeggio sul Mincio and asbestos landfill: critical environmental impact

The Regional Technical Committee for Environmental Impact Assessment has recently issued a negative opinion regarding the proposal for the construction of the largest asbestos landfill in Veneto, planned for the municipality of Valeggio sul Mincio, near the village of Quaderni. The conference of services, convened on Wednesday, June 25, to discuss the authorization of the facility proposed by Progeco Ambiente Spa, did not take place due to concerns raised about the environmental impact and safety of the site, which is located in a fragile area just 1 km from the community.

This is merely the latest in over 230 negative opinions received from local authorities, associations, and citizens opposed to the project. The Committee for the Defense of the Quaderni Valeggio Territory has highlighted the project’s shortcomings and the public health risks associated with its proximity to the existing Cà Baldassarre landfill. Although the negative opinion represents an important step in the decision-making process, it does not constitute a definitive rejection; the committee continues to work towards reinstating the ban on new landfills in critical areas for groundwater.
