On Saturday, November 1st, the ceremony for the XVI Vittoriale Prize took place at Il Vittoriale degli Italiani in Gardone Riviera. This prestigious recognition was awarded this year to Francesco Tullio-Altan, a renowned Italian cartoonist and illustrator. The choice to honor the creator of iconic characters such as Pimpa and the satirical figure Cipputi highlights the connection between the institution and figures who, like d’Annunzio, have demonstrated a free spirit and a critical perspective on reality. The event, set against the backdrop of the Lake Garda, celebrates personalities who have profoundly influenced the collective and cultural imagination of the country. A Master Between Childhood and Social Critique Altan’s work spans seemingly distant worlds, from children’s publishing—celebrating the 50th anniversary of Pimpa in 2025—to sharp political satire. His creations have had a significant cultural impact, inspiring popular films, exhibitions, and animated series. It is precisely this ability to blend intelligence and irony that has been recognized by the Foundation. The Reasons from President Guerri The decision to award Francesco Tullio-Altan was made by the Foundation’s president, Giordano Bruno Guerri, in conjunction with the Board of Directors. In the official statement, Guerri praised the artist: “His refined irony on the most challenging themes, his exceptional ability to synthesize, and his unmistakable style have made both adults and children reflect and smile with equal mastery for over half a century.” The Ceremony at the Museo d’Annunzio Segreto The event took place at 6:30 PM on Saturday, with free access for the public until seating was filled. The official award presentation occurred in one of the most enchanting areas of the complex, the Museo d’Annunzio Segreto. President Guerri presented Altan with the award, which consisted of a fine sculpture specially created by the artist Mimmo Paladino. The Honor Roll of the Award The Vittoriale Prize is awarded to prominent figures in various fields of knowledge who have made a significant impact through their work. Francesco Tullio-Altan joins a list of illustrious predecessors who have received the award in previous editions, including Ermanno Olmi, Paolo Conte, Umberto Veronesi, Giorgio Albertazzi, Alberto Arbasino, Ida Magli, Riccardo Muti, Piero Angela, Samantha Cristoforetti, Marco Bellocchio, Sergio Castellitto, Ernesto Galli della Loggia, Mario Botta, Nicola Crocetti, and Vasco Rossi.
