Municipal Council Clash Over Budget, Accusations and Political Tensions

If anyone had thought that the relationship between Margherita and Riva Domani had normalized, after the outburst of the councilor Torboli the other evening during the city council meeting, they will have to think again.

The budget councilor had not appreciated the triumphant tone that the previous evening his colleague Matteotti had used to praise the administrative skills of the coalition, essentially measuring its capabilities by the number of public works delivered to the citizens.

Reactions and accusations between councilors

Torboli lost his temper and on Tuesday evening responded forcefully to the public works councilor, whom he accused of not having fairly distributed the credits for a successful administrative season and of not having considered the provision of quality services to the citizens at all.

Moreover, he accused him of allocating a large part of the budget residuals, which is essentially cash, to projects impossible to complete in a short time, forcing the Municipality to take on additional loans to meet new requirements.

Reactions from the opposition and minority

The audience was stunned, both the opposition, which greeted the outburst with a sly smile, and the minority forces: Torboli’s allies swore they didn’t know what their leading man was hiding, while those from Margherita put on a brave face, still determined to settle the matter once the budget was approved.

And while waiting for the decisive moment, many minority members, apparently captivated by the behavior of their provincial counterparts, adopted an attitude that in political jargon could be called obstructive, but which “actually translated,” as they commented among themselves, “into bar talk.”

Interventions during the session and majority proposals

Aside from the usual de Eccher, who was prompt in asking for clarifications on specific points of the financial document he hadn’t been convinced by, the interventions by Zambotti (over an hour) and Daves, were certainly record-breaking—they leaned more towards general commentary than explicit requests for details.

Thus, the session was adjourned, but the majority already has a proposal in mind to limit the duration of interventions, in order to quickly approve the document.

Subject to the outbursts of the councilors, of course.
