Youth Center Construction Resumes as Pensioners’ Opposition Ends
The Pensioners’ Club, which had mobilized a couple of months ago to oppose the Social Activities Department’s plan to install a prefabricated structure for the Youth Center between the headquarters and the building that until last autumn housed the Tennis Club on viale delle Palme, has laid down its arms and abandoned all opposition.
Resumption of work and response to young people’s needs
Yesterday morning, in fact, workers from the company tasked with adapting the former tennis locker rooms to meet the temporary needs of young people—who were forced to hurriedly leave the former savings bank building two years ago—reopened the construction site and resumed assembling the prefab structure, which has nonetheless been placed at more than three meters from one of the secondary entrances to the Pensioners’ Club headquarters.
“On the part of the pensioners,” said Councillor Costa yesterday morning, “a great deal of reasonableness was demonstrated, after the initial wall of opposition; the reasons of the young people and the administrative needs to provide them, with some urgency, with an appropriate structure to guarantee a decent level of operation were understood.”
Modifications and space utilization
Such operational capacity could not be realized without the prefabricated structure, but also with the entire space occupied by the former tennis courts, where a fenced platform is planned to be built, allowing for volleyball and basketball games.
To make these courts usable again, an asphalt surface will be laid over the two tennis courts, covered by a synthetic surface suitable for the two sports most popular among young people.
Access and regulations for sports facilities
Access to the sports facilities, even if management will be entrusted to the responsible personnel of the Youth Center, will not be restricted to anyone: obviously, as clarified by Councillor Costa, usage will be subject to a regulation to be prepared in time for the inauguration of the facility and the headquarters.
Regarding the dates, Councillor Costa expressed confidence that, at the latest by the end of September, the Youth Center should be able to resume its activities at full capacity.
