Electromagnetic Exposure at Riva Kindergarten Sparks Legal and Scientific Debate
Among the 56 sites identified by the province as deserving of particular attention regarding exposure to electromagnetic waves, there is the Kindergarten Garden on Viale Roma in Riva, directly opposite the antennas installed by Omnitel on the rooftop of the Vivaldelli house.
The president Giorgio Chiettini moreover does not fully agree with the new regulation that the province is about to adopt, even though it is more restrictive than the national one.
Chiettini is awaiting the ruling of the Tar, which has filed an appeal against the ordinance that required the town to have the antennas moved from that location.
Consultations and Measurements
The Tar appointed an expert, Omnitel, and two others chosen by their respective parties, and together they conducted measurements of the magnetic field intensity to which the children are exposed.
The results are available to the court and are not yet official; however, it appears they are below the provincial limit, leading Omnitel to have good hopes of winning the case.
Positions and Opinions
“What matters,” claims Chiettini, “should be the principle of safeguarding. Until science proves beyond any doubt that prolonged exposure, even at low intensities, is harmless, the exposure of children between 3 and 6 years old should be avoided.”
The kindergarten’s battle continues.
