Tignale Forest Fire Nearly Extinguished After Four Days of Efforts

It took four days, but finally, yesterday around noon, the fire in the Tignale forest was nearly extinguished, although some dangerous hotspots remain active.

The final estimate of the damage is around 25 hectares of forest, which have been irreparably destroyed.

The most affected area was the Coste locality in Tignale. An inaccessible area where the trees helped reduce the constant erosion of the ground during the winter season.

Firefighting and rehabilitation operations

The flames have been extinguished, but the work of the Forestry service, the Carabinieri of Gargnano, the volunteers from Tignale Soccorso, and the Salò Fire Brigade— the forces involved so far in the firefighting efforts— is not yet completed.

“The work that the fire crews need to perform now,” observes Cosimo Abruzzo, commander of the Gargnano Carabinieri, “is perhaps just as important as the previous efforts. It involves clearing the entire underbrush. Operations that will require no less than two or three days of work.”

Indeed, this is a particularly delicate moment: just one pine cone falling from a tree and rolling among the small embers could restart the fire and threaten to destroy the forest again.

Current situation and preventive measures

The Salò Fire Brigade also confirms that “the situation has notably improved.” There are still small hotspots that need to be carefully extinguished.

Furthermore, in this phase, nocturnal prevention efforts are crucial. A task we will complete also thanks to the help of volunteer teams, particularly those from Tignale Soccorso.
