Monte Brione Hunting Season Closed by Provincial Council for 2023
Decision on Hunting Closure
Hunting is prohibited for the upcoming hunting season, which begins next Sunday, September 10, on the entire Monte Brione. This decision was made by the provincial council in response to the position of the municipal council, which was diametrically opposed to that of the hunters’ section. The hunters had wanted to continue shooting in a relatively small strip of wooded slopes.
Hunting was excluded from the upper part within the biotope (which, moreover, should be marked: signage has been absent for years), as well as from the olive grove area. The hunters had wished to maintain shooting at thrush, from a hide, in the central valley starting October 1st, excluding Sundays.
Proposals and Procedures
The section also proposed establishing a release and capture zone for the hare, covering about 150 hectares currently open to hunting, which the provincial fauna committee, an advisory body of the council, has agreed to support as the only option capable of reconciling the position of the municipality, which is entirely against hunting, and that of the hunters.
However, establishing the release and capture zone requires a lengthy and complex procedure, and so this year the provincial council decided simply to close the season.
The measure applies only to the 2000-2001 hunting season, from September 10 to January 31. Simultaneously, the provincial council will initiate the process to establish the hare release and capture zone. The shooting will resume in one year.
