Record Visitor Surge at Castello Scaligero in Malcesine This Summer
Record Visitors at Castello Scaligero in Malcesine
July was a record-breaking month at Castello Scaligero di Malcesine. Almost every year, during the tourist season, many complain that the number of visitors is decreasing. However, one data point might persuade some otherwise, at least regarding visitors to the Castello Scaligero.
In July, compared to last year, approximately 5,800 more people visited the fortress. In August, there were only about one thousand additional visitors, still an increase overall, though officials will need to wait until the end of the season to compare these figures seriously with those of last summer, which recorded a total of around 143,000 visitors.
Promotional Initiatives and Growth in Activities
The credit certainly goes to the publicity efforts led by Istituzione «Malcesine Più», which manages the town’s cultural tourism aspects and promotes them every winter. For the upcoming year, an increase in participation at international fairs is also planned.
Beyond Germany, Istituzione will promote the Melsian town in Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Contributing to the August increase was undoubtedly the enormous success of the Francisco Goya exhibition, which was on display in one of the castle’s rooms throughout last month.
Goya Exhibition and Extension of Displays
Many visitors came specifically to see the engravings by the renowned Spanish artist. Due to the exhibition’s success, the cultural department decided to extend the display of the eighty engravings titled “The Disasters of War”.
However, due to organizational issues, the exhibition has been relocated to Palazzo dei Capitani, where it will remain open to the public until September 15th. It will still be accessible to interested school groups until September 25th, with guided tours available.
