Lake Garda Water Levels Near Record Highs Amid Rain Threat
The water levels of Lake Garda remain very high. Yesterday morning, the level was recorded at 172 centimeters above the Peschiera hydrometric zero.
Just two centimeters below the maximum level reached last Tuesday, despite the substantial outflow maintained at a flow rate of 190 cubic meters per second.
Therefore, the alert status remains in effect, especially after the announcement of a new weather disturbance expected to bring heavy rains to the Sarca-Garda basin area.
At the same time, protests from residents and economic operators are increasing, concerned about a situation deemed unsustainable, with the probability of worsening further due to strong local winds and forecasted waves.
Responses from authorities
In the recent meeting held at the prefecture, the situation was analyzed by the mayors of the lake municipalities, who requested a state of calamity.
“By retaining as much water as possible,” – said Lazise Mayor Luca Sebastiano – “the Garda basin significantly contributes to the safety of people living along the Po and Adige rivers.”
“This is a justified concern, considering that there are no risks but only inconveniences for the populations of Garda. Inconveniences and damages that, however, must be justly recognized in their extent.”
“During the meeting at the prefecture,” intervenes Aristide Avanzini, public works councilor of Bardolino, “the municipalities on the Veronese side united in their stance.
The Regional Council (Giunta regionale) has been asked to submit a request for a state of calamity to the Government. A way to allow the Garda administrations to decide on any extraordinary, urgent, and necessary expenses without having to go through the usual bureaucratic procedures.”
